Lorazepam for Alcohol Withdrawal

چکیده
The index case belongs to the second category. Psychiatric illness is not a feature of men who commit filicide. In contrast, a link between maternal mental illness and filicide especially of young child has been reported (D' Orban, 1979; Marks and Kumar, 1993). Most parents show psychiatric symptoms prior to act of filicide. The guilt of killing one's own child and the hostile feelings towards other alive children during recovery need to be looked into seriously. This calls for the regular risk assessment of domestic violence by a psychotic parent towards his/her children. The reaction of hospital staff as well as of the reaction of the spouse would affect immediate care and the future support for the patient.

STUDY OBJECTIVES Insomnia is a central symptom of alcohol withdrawal and increases relapse potential. The primary objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of gabapentin to lorazepam in alleviating sleep disturbances and daytime sleepiness during an episode of alcohol withdrawal. The secondary objective of this study was to determine if drug treatment efficacy differed by the patient ...
متن کاملA comparative study of the clinical efficacy and safety of Lorazepam and chlordiazepoxide in alcohol dependence syndrome.
BACKGROUND Currently, benzodiazepines are the preferred drugs in the management of alcohol withdrawal symptoms. Chlordiazepoxide and diazepam, the most frequently used drugs have a long duration of action and are converted to active metabolites in the liver, while lorazepam is shorter acting, with no active metabolites. OBJECTIVE To compare and evaluate the safety and efficacy of lorazepam an...
متن کاملPhenobarbital for acute alcohol withdrawal: a prospective randomized double-blind placebo-controlled study.
BACKGROUND Acute alcohol withdrawal syndrome (AAWS) is encountered in patients presenting acutely to the Emergency Department (ED) and often requires pharmacologic management. OBJECTIVE We investigated whether a single dose of intravenous (i.v.) phenobarbital combined with a standardized lorazepam-based alcohol withdrawal protocol decreases intensive care unit (ICU) admission in ED patients w...
متن کاملRetrospective Review of Critically Ill Patients Experiencing Alcohol Withdrawal: Dexmedetomidine Versus Propofol and/or Lorazepam Continuous Infusions.
BACKGROUND Alcohol withdrawal symptoms can be difficult to manage and may lead to an intensive care unit (ICU) admission. Patients experiencing severe alcohol withdrawal often require high doses of sedatives, which can lead to respiratory depression and the need for endotracheal intubation. Dexmedetomidine, an alpha-2 adrenoreceptor agonist, provides adequate sedation with little effect on resp...
